A modular limiter built for deep, transparent gain reduction. Rather than modeling decades-old hardware, it works from the math — the envelope, the crest, and the acceleration of the signal itself — exploiting every advantage that opens up.

A 500-series-inspired rack lets you add, remove, and reorder stages to build 480 possible limiters — from a single clean pass to a fully loaded dual-pass, multiband chain.

Dual-pass limiting combines two parallel, independent sidechains and applies their gain reductions together in a single stage, so you get the benefits of cascaded limiting without the artifacts of chaining two hard limiters.

Assemble the limiter like a studio rack. Enable only the columns you need — from a minimal two-column chain for quick, low-CPU limiting up to a full six-column configuration with dual stages, auto output, and safety.

Optional multiband limiting brings frequency-dependent gain reduction across four bands, with independent thresholds, tone-balance controls, and five reconstruction methods — Minimum, Weighted, RMS, Peak-Aware, and Energy Conservation.

Always run multiband mode with at least one safety limiter enabled — on its own it will not clamp peaks to a true 0 dBFS ceiling.

Two peak-detection methods set how the limiter catches transients. Instant works sample-by-sample with negligible latency, ideal for tracking and percussive material, while windowed analyzes peaks over a held buffer, adding latency for smoother, flutter-free reduction.

Adaptive Drive finds the precise moment where more drive stops buying more loudness, using a novel motion-based detection to sit right at that edge on any material.

Hard Safety is a final, transparent brick-wall stage fixed at 0 dBFS, so nothing can escape above full scale. It is a simple, CPU-efficient limiter and more forgiving than the crest-based compensation in Soft Safety.

Advanced plotting, visualizations, and metering let you see your sound while you work in embedded or standalone windows. Waveform, FFT, loudness, phase, and stereo views provide a clear picture of exactly what the system is doing.

The built-in TEST feature runs a controlled signal through your chain so you can view the limiting envelope and confirm a given frequency is fully limited before you print.

SOFT SAFETY — CREST-FACTOR LOUDNESS

Soft Safety is an intelligent output stage that analyzes your already-limited signal and applies adaptive gain to hold a steady level — with no hard ceiling and without flattening the mix.

Its Crest Compensation control balances peak versus RMS influence, exploiting the crest factor left in a track to recover real, usable loudness.

Block size, overlap, peak and RMS smoothing, and gain bounds let you dial in exactly how it behaves.

The standard installer above already includes the current macOS plugin formats listed in Technical Specs. Install an AUv2 build below only if your host application specifically requires AUv2 — for example, SoundSource by Rogue Amoeba.

Important: macOS allows only one Audio Unit version of Altitude Limiter on a system at a time. Installing the AUv2 plugin will replace any existing AUv3 install of Altitude Limiter, and vice versa. The standalone app and VST3 plugin are unaffected.
